Click It or Ticket Campaign

Over the past three (3) weeks, during the Memorial Day Holiday, the Ansonia, Derby, Seymour and Shelton Police Departments joined with other state and local law enforcement agencies, as well as with highway safety officials to participate in an aggressive, national Click It or Ticket Campaign to make sure that seatbelts are being worn by drivers and occupants.

Once again, the cooperation between the Departments resulted in not only increased awareness to the use of seatbelt but also in numerous tickets being issued to those operators who still are not in compliance.

Through the use of checkpoints at various locations, the four Valley Departments issued a total o f897 infractions along with 14 misdemeanor arrests.  Broken down by towns, the results were as follows:

Ansonia     210 Infractions     5 Misdemeanors

Derby        210 Infractions     4 Misdemeanors

Seymour    238 Infractions     2 Misdemeanors

Shelton      239 Infractions     3 Misdemeanors

Regular Seatbelt use is the single most effective way to protect people and to reduce fatalities in motor vehicle crashes.  In 2005, 77 percent of passenger vehicle occupants in a serious crash, who were buckled up, survived the crash.  When worn correctly, seatbelts have proven to reduce the risk of fatal injury to front-seat passenger car occupants by 45 percent and by 60 percent in pickup trucks, SUV's and minivans.  In addition, operators of motor vehicles are more likely to have control of their vehicle during and evasive maneuver when they are wearing the seatbelt than if they are not.

Although the recent campaign is over, drivers should not be relaxing.  Officer will be still out there looking for not just seatbelt violators, but other motor vehicle violations such as speeding, reckless driving, driving under the influence and cell phone use.

Let's make this a safe and happy summer.  Remember the life you save may be your own or the occupants of your vehicle.  Click It or Ticket to Help Save Lives-Day and Night.
