Dive Team
Team Members
The Shelton Police Department Dive Team is responsible for water search, rescue and recovery within the City of Shelton and to assist other surrounding towns as needed. The City of Shelton has numerous lakes and reservoirs within the City limits, as well as the Housatonic River and the Canal Street Canals. The Housatonic River is a busy water way for recreational boaters from Shelton's three marinas, as well as home for the Yale University and Fairfield University Crew Teams. Also located along the Housatonic's Shelton shoreline is Indian Well State Park. The Shelton Police Dive Team is the Primary Dive Team for Sikorsky Aircraft and the D.E.P.'s Shelton area.
In early 2006, Echo Hose Ambulance Corps donated a retired ambulance to the Shelton Police Department. This vehicle will be outfitted for Emergency Services. One of the uses of this vehicle will be to transport divers and their equipment to call outs and training. In 2002, the Shelton Police Dive Team was called into service only once. The detail was for an evidence search in the Naugatuck River in Derby. While Derby has a dive team, the Shelton Police Department, with Derby's assistance, conducted the search as the evidence was for a Shelton case.
In late April of 2003, the
Dive Team was called out to search and recover a suitcase In 2005, the Shelton Police Dive Team was called out to assist D.E.P. in recovering lost items off of a boat ramp and sunken anchor posts at Indian Well State Park. The Dive Team also responded to Derby for a vehicle in the water, that ended up being unoccupied. Also in Derby, the Dive Team recovered evidence in a Shelton Burglary out of a canal. Unfortunately, the Dive Team was also called out for a drowning victim at the end of the summer at Indian Well State Park.
