Systems & Information Management

Robert T. Caponi Systems & Information Manager

Systems and Information Management (SIM) is the Information Technology department for the Shelton Police Department.  The responsibility of SIM is to maintain and support all desktop, laptop, server and mobile computer hardware, software, and network hardware and security.

In 2000, the Shelton Police Department took a giant leap in upgrading its technological infrastructure.  Police Headquarters was wired for a new network to be installed.  Then a new server was purchased as well as eighteen desktop computer that would utilize the an Records Management System (RMS) from Nexgen called Law Enforcement Administration System (LEAS).  LEAS provided for a single repository of Shelton Police Department Information.  In the past, there were multiple systems running at Shelton Police Department.

In 2000, Mobile Data Terminals (MDTs)  were installed in all of the Patrol Units.  Current MDTs have a touch screen located on the dashboard and the computer is installed in the glove box.  This system allows officers access to NCIC/COLLECT, DMV, Department of Correction Photos, Dispatching information and also allows them to do reports in their patrol unit that can then be transferred wirelessly to headquarters.  Officers can also instant message all Shelton Police officers.

In 2005, SIM began upgrading the desktop computers and monitors at headquarters.  Mini towers and LCD monitors allow for more room at work stations and the upgraded computers allow for quicker information processing.

Also in 2005, an internal website was created that allowed for more information to be passed on to officers.  Department news, current warrant information and photos of those wanted, training schedules, manuals and forms, and even a classified ad section is posted on this site.  Officers can download policy manuals, and fill both department and state forms from the site and print them out.

The Valley Street Crime Unit upgraded their hardware and also came online with LEAS.  SIM facilitated this change and currently is maintaining their new network and hardware as well.

SIM is also responsible for all maintenance for hardware and software.  This includes routine hardware maintenance and repairs, software maintenance, upgrades, purchases and security of both.

Finally, SIM has created and maintains the Shelton Police Department website.
