OVERVIEW
OF DARE
D.A.R.E - Drug
Abuse Resistance Education
DARE began in
1983 as a joint program between the Los Angeles Police
Department and the Los Angeles Unified School District. The
program, currently headquartered in Los Angeles was designed to
help combat the growing problems of drugs, gangs and violence.
Today DARE is taught in more than 52 countries with over 49,000
officers and has had more than 33,000,000 graduates since its
inception.
The emphasis of
DARE is to help students recognize and resist the many direct
and subtle pressures that influence them to experiment with
alcohol, tobacco, marijuana, inhalants or other drugs or to
engage in violence.
